Experience the midwinter darkness

The darkest period during winter in Överkalix is December to January, a cosy time when the sun just barely rises above the horizon. Midwinter is a magical time with warming fires, starry infinite skies, and good chances of catching the northern lights. This special period of dark days, with an average of 2–3 hours of daylight per day, is an experience out of the ordinary and something many visitors will remember for the rest of their lives.

In midwinter time right before the sun sets, during what is known as the blue hour, you may experience a very special phenomenon. The blue light reflected in the snow paints everything blue and creates an enchanted and mysterious ambience not to be found anywhere else in the world.
